11 Do’s and Don’ts of Your First Trimester

Now that you just found out your pregnant (congrats momma!!), you’re probably wondering ‘what are the 1st trimester of pregnancy dos and don’ts?!’

There’s so much information out there! What can and can’t I do? What shouldn’t I eat?!

It gets overwhelming.

Especially since your hormones are going crazy during these first 12 weeks.

So what can you do to not just survive, but also thrive during these couple of weeks?

Do’s and Don’ts Of Your First Trimester

DO Start Taking Folic Acid

The second you find out you’re pregnant, start taking a folic acid supplement.

Folic acid is an essential nutrient that helps protect your babies brain and spinal cord against things like spina bifida.

You may also take prenatal vitamins, but as long as you maintain a healthy, balanced diet throughout your pregnancy, you really just need the folic acid.

DO Prepare For Morning Sickness

The first trimester almost always includes morning sickness for women.

And contrary to the name, morning sickness can last all day during the early stages of pregnancy.

There are a couple of teas that help combat nausea and are specially formulated for pregnant mommas.

Brew yourself a warm cup in the mornings if you’re prone to morning sickness.

There’s also some morning sickness hard candies you can take if you aren’t a tea person.

Both of which are perfectly safe for you and your baby.

DO Buy A Good Moisturizer

Even if you aren’t showing in your first trimester, you’ll want to get into the habit of moisturizing your entire body.

DO Work Out

During your first trimester, the last thing you might want to do is workout.

Between the nausea and low energy, it’s going to be tough motivating yourself to get a good workout in.

You should however get your body moving. Even if you can’t run your usual 6 miles, you can still go for a 30-minute walk.

Being active throughout your pregnancy can help you have a more comfortable pregnancy and reduce the risk of complications.

DO Create A Registry

You’ll be doing a lot of research and seeing loads of products you want, so why not start your baby registry now?

When family and friends ask what you want, you have somewhere to direct them.

DO Schedule Prenatal Appointments

It’s likely your clinic won’t be able to see you for immediately so go ahead and book those prenatal appointments before you need them!

It’s one less thing to worry about down the road.

DON’T Get Stressed

It’s easy to get overwhelmed in the early months with all the things you have to do, but try not to get stressed out!

Stress is bad for your health and for the baby. Take everything in strides, take deep breaths, and use a pregnancy planner to stay organized and stress-free.

Keep your focus on taking care of yourself and not worrying about he little things, like what color to paint the nursery.

DO Get Lots Of Sleep

Excitement and hormones can have you up all night, but being pregnant is very demanding and you’ll need your sleep.

Don’t feel bad about taking a couple of snoozes or going to bed earlier. Trust me, once the baby arrives, you’ll wish you slept more before.

DON’T Eat Deli Meats

Meats that are sliced have far more bacterial growth than a regular chicken breast or steak.

Deli meat such as hot dogs, sausages, and smoked salmon can cause foodborne illnesses. Aim for healthier, less processed options during your pregnancy.

DON’T Drink A Lot Of Coffee

Research suggests you can have one cup of coffee a day without it affecting your baby. But if you grab multiple cups of lattes with double shots of espressos, you’ll want to curb that habit.

Caffeine travels through your body and can speed up the baby’s heart rate, having negative effects on their health.

DON’T Clean The Cats Litter Box

You an cuddle and pet your feline companion all you want, but cat waste isn’t safe for expecting mothers.

Feline waste is filled with millions of bacteria and parasites, one of which is particularly harmful your child. The worst part of this parasite is there is no way to know you have it. A miscarriage and stillbirth could be possible, as well as your baby developing seizures and mental disabilities.
